Spring Training: Who’s on First?

Sunday, March 4, Noon - 1 PM

Who’s on team First Parish? The Nominating Committee invites you to join us for “Spring Training.” At First Parish, we are reliant on the work of volunteers to keep us running. We are standing on the threshold of change, poised to leap into a new era. We invite you to join the team on Sunday March 4th as we move forward.

This is an invitational practice session for new-comers, some-timers and long-timers to step-up and discover how your skills and talents may support First Parish. Team players will share information about committees and take part in small group discussions. Come and step into something new.

UU will win when you play for our team. You’ll always be in first place at First Parish. With your help we will knock it out of the park! For more information please ask Larry Cotton, Lori Fanara, Liz Cole Sheehan or Crystal Thorpe. Let us know if you need child care. Let us know that you will join us. Save the date! Having a good game isn’t up to one person – it’s up to all of us to step-up and play together. We are a team.

Occupy 101 Workshop

Monday, February 27, 7 PM, First Parish UU Church, Bridgewater

Location: Upper Parish Hall, First Parish Church UU, 50 School Street, Bridgewater, MA

Directions to the church: At the southerly end of the Bridgewater Town Common, turn east onto School Street. The church is on the left just past the Fire Station and the Hunt School. Parking is available on the street or in the unpaved alley next to the church. Come in the lower door in the modern wing and climb the steps to the second floor Upper Parish Hall. We regret this floor is temporarily not handicapped accessible.

Presenter: Terra Friedrichs, a volunteer with Occupy Boston and long-time social activist. Sponsored by the Social Justice Committee of First Parish Church.

Terra Friedrichs has been a social justice activist for decades. She got an early start advocating for housing during the housing crisis at UMass in the 1980s. More recently, she served as a Selectman in the town of Acton, has written hundreds of letters to the editor and has served on countless boards and committees. Terra is now helping to spread the word around the state about how people can get involved in outreach and policy reform to help change the system that has become unfairly dominated by "the 1%".

About the Workshop: Occupy 101 is a two-hour workshop for newcomers to the Occupy Movement. The Occupy Movement is a loosely organized group of individuals who are learning how to organize to address issues, locally, regionally, and around the world. The movement was sparked by people’s growing realization that important community assets of our economic system are increasingly under the control of a relatively few.

The workshop is broken into two segments. The first consists of a brief lecture on the history of the Occupy Movement, including a discussion of the roots of activism that helped to fuel it. It also includes an introduction to the Occupy General Assembly process and its other consensus building processes that help build community strength and fuel civic activism. If the group wants, the second part of the workshop can be more hands-on in nature, and include group discussion exercises modeled after the Occupy Working Group and General Assembly processes. It is hoped that participants will be able to use these tools in their own organizing efforts.

This workshop is free and open to the public.

For More Information: Contact Rev. Rachel Tedesco, Community Minister, by email or Betty Gilson, Convener of the church’s Social Justice Committee by email. Although a reservation is not required, we’d like to know how many participants to plan for. To reserve a place at the workshop, you may call the church office at 508-697-2525, choose mailbox 8 and leave your message.

Immigrant Rights: From Massachusetts to Arizona

Saturday, March 10, 9 AM - Noon, First Parish Church, Duxbury

To get ready for this year's General Assembly and to start a statewide immigrant's rights campaign UU Mass Action, in partnership with the Ballou Channing, Mass Bay, and Clara Barton Districts, will be hosting a series of workshops across the state called Immigrant Rights: From Massachusetts to Arizona. At the event we will preview the Frontline Documentary Lost in Detention which paints a stark picture of what happens to individuals and families caught up in our countries unfair immigrations policies. Maria Hinojosa, who is the Frontline Documentarian who produced Lost in Detention, will be the Ware Lecture at GA this year. We will also get policy briefings by local immigrant rights organizations about what the needs are right here in Massachusetts, we will learn more about what will be happening at this year's General Assembly and we will get a chance to strategize about how we might be able to work together to stand on the side of love with immigrants in Massachusetts.

First Parish Church, Duxbury, 842 Tremont Street, Duxbury will be hosting the workshop for the Ballou Channing District. Advanced registration is requested. Go to www.cbd-mbd-uua.org/immigrant-rights or call 617-393-4216. The workshop is free, though a free-will offering will be taken to support our immigration partner organization.

So please join us as we host UU Mass Action and learn about this important civil rights issue.

General Assembly 2012General Assembly 2012

Wednesday, June 20, to Sunday, June 24, Phoenix, Arizona

The Annual Meeting of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations— An Historic and Unique General Assembly

Unitarian Universalists are being called to join together this year in Phoenix for an historic, one-of-a-kind UUA General Assembly—one focused on justice and human rights. In a time when our country is experiencing a host of injustices this General Assembly calls us:

This General Assembly is intended to be multigenerational, actively involving youth, young adults and families of all ages. There will be less business and more worship, learning, networking, public witness and work.

This GA has the potential to move us to a higher level of involvement in our communities and the world, not just this year, but into the future.
