Sunday Services

First Parish chaliceOn Sunday mornings in September through June, our Paul Revere bell rings at 10:20, calling the people to worship. As they enter, the organ or piano sets the mood for meditation or quiet visiting, and the service starts at 10:30.

Large print orders of service and hear assistance devices are available from an usher.

All are welcome to join us for Coffee Hour and Fellowship in the Parish Hall after the service around 11:30 AM. Nursery care is provided every Sunday.

If you are a newcomer with children, please introduce yourself to our Director of Religious Education, Angela Konzal, who will be at the front doors every Sunday with one of the children from the RE program greeting all families with children. They will have on hand a special welcoming packet designed for visiting families. Angela is also available from 9:30 AM - 1 PM in the RE office on Sundays and at other times by appointment to answer any question you may have about the Religious Education Program at First Parish.

Be a UU evangelist! Bring a friend or neighbor on Sunday.

February 5: Music Service

Jim Chubet and Rev. Buffy Boke

We sang before we talked — so says Steven Mithen, author of "The Singing Neanderthals." Music is central to human wellbeing. Today's program will present several pieces to lift our spirits and make our hearts sing. Service starts at 10:20 AM.

Music: The service will feature music by great composers from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods as well as French music of the early 20th century. We will have music for wind trio (oboe, clarinet and bassoon) and harp, soprano, piano solo and choir.

Our service will focus on a celebration of great music. Reverend Buffy Boke will share several perceptive readings about the nature and power of music. And throughout the service, you will listen to a wide variety of works by some of the greatest composers of the Western world from the Baroque period through the early 20th century.

The service will open at 10:20 AM with a very special Prelude featuring a “Viennese” Sonatina of Mozart performed by a trio of wind instruments consisting of Gary Fox on oboe, Jean Beebe on bassoon and Liz Leehey on clarinet. Please try to come early, get settled and enjoy this special performance!

For our opening Introit, our stellar choir will sing a lively selection by the English Baroque composer Henry Purcell from The Fairy Queen entitled “May the God of Wit Inspire.”

During the service, pianist David La Fontaine will play a lovely piece by Francis Poulenc and soprano Ruthie Miller will sing songs by Johannes Brahms and Gabriel Fauré. At the Offertory, the wind trio will be joined by harpist Ellen Fox for music from the Mother Goose Suite by Maurice Ravel. And for the Postlude, Jim Chubet will play the last piece of solo piano music composed by Brahms, his impassioned “Rhapsody in E-Flat Major.”

Children and Youth: Children and youth will start in the sanctuary and then proceed to the chapel.

February 12: It's Almost Valentine's Day

Rev. Buffy Boke and the Nominating Committee

it's almost Valentine's Day — the day we express our love for one another with cards, flowers, and candy. Expressing our love for our congregation also takes the shape of offering our time and talents to the operations of the church. There will be candy.

Music:The choir will sing a beautiful arrangement of Billy Joel’s heartfelt song “And So It Goes” as arranged by the King’s Singers. This touching ode to taking chances in personal relationships will feature a solo by Brian Shoemaker.

Children and Youth: Intergenerational Service. Children and youth will start and stay in the sanctuary.

February 19: Friendship in the Digital Age

Peter Bowden, Guest Preacher

On Unitarian Universalism and the challenge of Social Media. Today people are “connected” more than ever thanks to smart phones and communication tools such as Facebook and Twitter. Yet Americans are statistically some of the loneliest people on Earth! In this talk, Peter Bowden will share how we can use the best of both worlds — online and offline — to create the communities and world so many of us dream of.

Music:The choir will sing one of Jim Chubet's favorite pieces in the Singing the Journey songbook. The song is a spiritual called “Hush” arranged by Jason Shelton.

Children and Youth: No RE Program — School Vacation. Nursery care will be provided
